Doctor Who Challenge: Day 14 - Character you like that everyone else hates - Martha Jones

The Doctor: Martha Jones, you saved the world.

Martha: Yes I did. I spent a lot of time with you thinking I was second best, but you know what? I am good.

Martha Jones is a star. A star. She was the most intelligent, loyal companion of NuWho. Everyone says she’s annoying because she fancied the Doctor. Quite honestly, he was the annoying one this season. He was the one who didn’t appreciate her. I love Ten, don’t get me wrong, but his Rose angst this season clouded him from seeing just how brilliant Martha really was. She was kick-ass, flawless, and so clever, and she did the work the Doctor couldn’t do. Martha spent a whole year trudging around world, spreading the word, that one special word, to even the darkest corners of the earth. And then it was all erased from history. Martha Jones saved the world and no one even knew it. She did it all for a man who barely appreciated her at times.

And then she got out. Martha was so strong that she left the man she loved. She travelled across the universe with the Doctor, and in the end, she was the one who abandoned him. That sounds unfathomably difficult. Once Martha said she was going, the Doctor finally acknowledged her. But she still did it, she still got out, because she is a star.

I love Martha Jones. She was amazing and doesn’t even get close to receiving the amount of respect she deserves.

I love everything about Martha said above. She was/is brilliant. She may never be my all time favorite, but non the less she will always be the strongest of the companions of ten.

So every once in a while, someone (or a couple of someones) will get it into their heads that it’d be cool to come visit us in real life by tracking down our addresses and knocking on our doors, or leaving presents on our doorstep or in our mail box.

As harmless as that no doubt is, it is for…

Gay marriage to be introduced in Scotland
Scotland is set to become the first part of the UK to introduce gay marriage after the SNP government announced plans to make the change.
Scottish ministers confirmed they would bring forward a bill on the issue.
Political leaders, equality groups welcomed the move, but it has been strongly opposed by the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland.
The announcement was made in the wake of a government consultation which produced a massive response.
Same-sex couples in Scotland currently have the option to enter into civil partnerships and the Holyrood government has insisted no part of the religious community would be forced to hold same-sex weddings in churches.
The Scottish government said;
it would work with UK ministers to amend equality laws, to ensure those views were protected,
and a bill would be brought forward to the Scottish Parliament to bring in the change.
Scotland’s deputy first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said: “We are committed to a Scotland that is fair and equal and that is why we intend to proceed with plans to allow same sex marriage and religious ceremonies for civil partnerships - we believe that this is the right thing to do.
“We are also mindful of the fact that the leaders of all of the other parties represented in parliament support same sex marriage and that there is significant parliamentary support for legislation.”
She went on: “The Scottish government has already made clear that no religious body will be compelled to conduct same sex marriages and we reiterate that today. Such protection is provided for under existing equality laws.

Gay marriage consultation
The Scottish government held a public consultation into the issue of same-sex marriage.
It had the biggest response of any Scottish government consultation.
There were 77,508 responses in total, with 14,779 from outside Scotland.
Some 64% of those who responded [including postcard and petition responses] said they were against same-sex marriage.

“However, our view is that to give certainty on protection for individual celebrants taking a different view from a religious body that does agree to conduct same sex marriages, an amendment will be required to the UK Equality Act.”
The Scottish government said it was now going ahead with another consultation to consider what extra measures are needed to guarantee freedom of speech, including the protection of religious beliefs of teachers and parents in schools.
Ministers said the Scottish Catholic Education Service would continue to decide on the faith content of the curriculum in Catholic denominational schools.
Despite opposition by the big religions, faith groups, including the United Reformed Church, the Quakers, Buddhists and the Pagan Federation back gay marriage.

Go Scotland!

Once more with feeling.

Always reblog the best video ever created.

I literally had to stand up and dance. I wonder if they’re available for VidCon 2013.

It would be a travesty that Verka didn’t win if the winner wouldn’t have been such a beautiful song. Not kidding, I still get goosebumps from this song after 5 years. Seriously my favorite top 2 in Eurovision of all time and it was in Helsinki. :)

John Green, while death threats to Laci Green are bad, no arguing wtih that, Laci’s done a lot more negative things than casually use the word “tranny”. She has videos up about her islamophobia as well as several that border on fat shaming.”

I have a lot of messages like this.

1. We can’t have constructive conversations about how to talk with each in respectful ways when we threaten people, because then the threatened are forcibly removed from the conversation.

2. I’m not attempting to defend transphobia or fat-shaming or islamophobia or islamophilia or anything else. I’m just saying that we literally cannot have productive conversations when voices are silenced by threats. So you can not say to Laci, “Hey, I don’t think Islam is inherently misogynistic, because of A, B, and C,” because Laci is not here, because she is staying away from the Internet for fear that further participation in it will lead to her murder. That’s not a good way to change the discourse about islamophobia or anything else.

MARGINALIZED PEOPLE ARE ALREADY FORCIBLY REMOVED FROM CONVERSATION BECAUSE ADDRESSING SAID ISSUES IS ALREADY A RISK.

OPPRESSION IS A THREAT.

YOU ARE REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS, AND IT IS MAKING ME SAD THAT YOU CAN BE SO SMART BUT SO DAMN IGNORANT.

YOU ARE PART OF THE CONVERSATION. NOW WE ARE YELLING, THOUGH. I’M NOT SURE THIS IS THE BEST WAY FOR US TO UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER.

You’re right that marginalized people are consistently removed from conversations, but in fact on tumblr and on YouTube there are strong and vibrant communities who feel comfortable addressing issues related to gender and race and sexuality and a wide variety of other topics that are often considered taboo, which is why you and I are here, having this discussion in public.

I’m not denying the reality of privilege. I just don’t think death threats improve the quality of discourse, and I don’t think threatening or harassing or scaring anyone is ever okay.

I AM PISSED OFF

fishingboatproceeds:

I am pissed off because Laci Green, one of the most promising young content creators on YouTube, has been forced off the Internet by death threats—apparently driven by her casual use of the word “tranny” in a video she made more than three years ago. (She apologized and even took down the video.)

Laci makes wonderful, hilarious, sex-positive videos that have been tremendously helpful to millions of people (including me). She makes people feel less alone and less ashamed. She’s wonderful, and YouTube and tumblr are very lucky to have her, and we should all be really pissed that her ability to make stuff has been compromised by threats.

Here’s the truth, although we don’t say it often: You want to know why there are so few women in the Top 100 most viewed lists on YouTube? Because women are far more likely to be stalked, threatened, and attacked on the Internet, and they are far more likely to see those attacks move from cyber-bullying to real life threats, which too often forces them to abandon their work and their audiences.

I’ve been making videoblogs for more than five years, and I have a large audience, and a few overeager fans have found out where I live over the years, and you know what they’ve done about it? They’ve left me candy. Now, to be clear, I was still very uncomfortable and freaked out by this. But they didn’t send me death threats with pictures of my apartment building the way they’ve done to Laci.

And Laci is not alone. Most of the women I’ve known from YouTube—from those with 5,000 subscribers to those with 500,000—have dealt with harassment and stalking, and it has affected their ability to create stuff.

It’s not acceptable. It’s not acceptable to respond to a transphobic comment with a threat to kill someone. It’s not acceptable to harass and stalk women because you want their attention. And it’s not acceptable to use threats and intimidation to silence women you disagree with.

YouTube and tumblr should respond aggressively to these reports, and we need stronger laws to combat this crap, because I’m tired of seeing brilliant women driven away from the Internet by trolls with nothing to contribute.

Doctor Who Giveaway!

Who doesn’t love giveaways? Surely some people, but they most likely live on Raxacorciofallapatorious. This giveaway is sort of back-to-school, school-is-cool themed, but well kind of just awesome. So, on to what’s included!

  • Super fantastic reusable bag equipped with Time Lord technology. Yes, it’s bigger on the inside! 5”x6” pouch expands into an 18”x20” bag. Put everything you need to rule the world in here (Toclafane not included. Probably best to keep running shoes in here). Created by the lovely Geekiana.
  • Steel wallet/cigarette case with TARDIS printed on it. Excellent for keeping credit cards, ID, and psychic paper. Open it up to see Ten’s TARDIS console. Another great Etsy creation made by FrostingOnTheTop.
  • TARDIS pencil pouch! Perfect for keeping pencils and pens so you can scribble BADWOLFBADWOLFBADWOLF on all your papers.
  • Eleven’s Sonic Screwdriver Pen. This is one sonic screwdriver that will do wood. Welllllll… paper. Also capable of looking awesome.
  • TARDIS spinning air freshener. All that traveling through time and space can make things sort of smell. Especially if your time and space is 6th period gym. Technically this is for your car (mounts on dash) but we all know the only rule is don’t run off, and clearly that’s flexible.

Phew. Glad you’re still reading. Now onto the rules strictly enforced guidelines.

  1. You don’t have to follow me; I’m not your mother.
  2. Only reblogs count. And you can only reblog five times max.
  3. The winner will be chosen on August 20th. Yes I know it’s a ways away, but I’ll be out of the country.
  4. ???
  5. Allons-y!
